RPS holds back-to-school rally

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - Richmond Public Schools hosted its annual back to school rally with bands and a color guard at the Arthur Ashe Center.

School employees gathered for some fun as they're excited to kickoff the upcoming school year.

"It's a new school year. We are a new administration. I'm ready for the kids to come back," Derrick Bates, who teaches at George Mason Elementary, said. "I'm teacher of the year of at my school. I'm just excited to bring on a-whole lot of new ideas."

Mayor Levar Stoney, who also attended the rally, said teachers were already excited before the rally.

"Our teachers already walk through the doors motivated, but to add the extra bump, extra boost, right at the beginning of the year means so much," Stoney said.

Teachers like Bates don't take events like this for granted because they say they love working in RPS schools.

"We want to make sure our children have everything they need and our teachers have all the energy and motivation necessary to make sure our students all the can to ensure their success," Stoney said.
