Daycare worker found guilty of slapping child
CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) - A former employee for Childcare Network Daycare on Walmsley Boulevard in Chesterfield County has been found guilty of assault and battery for slapping a 10-year-old.
The incident happened July 5 when Tristen Crump said she brought her 10-year-old daughter, Taniyah, and her two younger siblings to their summer program at Childcare Network.
Taniyah said she was playing a game with her friends during free time when she was slapped by one of her instructors, Tina Mayo. According to Childcare Network's website, Mayo worked at the facility for 12 years.
"The teacher came out of nowhere and slapped me in the face," Taniyah said. "I was ready to cry, but I didn't."
Crump pulled her daughter out of the daycare and filed a criminal complaint and a restraining order against Mayo.
"I wanted to cry," Crump said. "I was like, I'm taking my daughter here to be protected and y'all are abusing my kid? Who else kids are being abused?"
Mayo pled not guilty in court but was found guilty Tuesday. According to court documents, Mayo is prohibited from contacting the victim or her family. She was sentenced to 12 months in prison, with all of it suspended.
Mayo is required to complete the SCAN program, which stands for Stop Child Abuse Now by the beginning of January. If she doesn't, according to the sheriff's office, there is a chance the judge will impose some of that jail time.
Mayo's information has since been removed from Childcare Network Daycare's website.
