A dog who alerted its family to an early morning house fire has died.

Chesterfield Fire and EMS was called to 6100 block of Windrush Court just after 3 a.m. on Sunday.

The smoke alarms and the dog barking alerted the family of four to the fire.

Firefighters rescued the single mother with her family on the roof.

But their puppy, who woke the family up, died in the fire.

Neighbors say this has left the family lost.

"A lot of fear, uncertainty, with what's going on," neighbor Scott Novak said.

They say the oldest child was ready to go back to college this week and is now out of her school supplies. And the younger two, who start school in two weeks, are in the same situation. To top all of that off, they're all dealing with the loss of the dog who saved their lives.

"Unfortunately, they don't have the opportunity to reward the dog," Novak said.

Fire officials say all four were taken to the hospital for minor injuries.

The cause of this fire is still under investigation.

The Red Cross also assisted the family in finding a place to stay.
