RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - As students get ready to return to Virginia Commonwealth, police are reminding students to keep their doors and windows locked.

VCU Police issued an alert Monday afternoon after a reported burglary in the 1000 block of W. Franklin Street.

Police say someone entered a residence through an "unsecured area and removed personal property."

"There are certain things you need to be aware of when living in an urban environment," VCU Police said in its alert. "Crimes may occur in our community, and the best defense is to be prepared and to take responsibility for your own safety and for that of your friends and fellow students."

Tuesday is orientation for some students at VCU.
