Man dead in shooting with Virginia deputies
AMHERST, VA (WWBT) - A man died and a deputy was injured Sunday morning after a shootout in Amherst County.
The Amherst County Sheriff's Office received a call to be on the lookout for a 2014 maroon Nissan Altima that was a suspect vehicle in a deadly shooting in Nelson County.
A vehicle matching that description was spotted on Route 29 in Amherst County.
A deputy attempted a traffic stop, but the suspect - identified as Anthony Makai Hutchinson, 40, Waynesboro - fled south on Route 29 at a high rate of speed, Virginia State Police said.
The vehicle eventually ran off the road near Spencer Mountain Road and crashed.
"As the deputies exited their vehicles, the driver of the Nissan opened fire with a handgun from inside the Nissan striking one of the responding deputies," police said. "Deputies returned gunfire striking the suspect."
Hutchinson died at the scene.
The deputy who was struck received a non-life-threatening wound.
"In accordance with Amherst County policy, three deputies have been placed on administrative leave while the investigation is being completed," said state police.
This incident occurred about 25 minutes after a woman's body was found at a home on Avon Road in Nelson County, the Daily Progress reports.
NBC29 reports that the woman killed in that incident was 29-year-old Alexia S. Lockett. Police say that Hutchinson and Lockett knew each other.
Both incidents remain under investigation.
