Assault on Charlottesville police officer sparks investigation
CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (WWBT) - The Charlottesville police department is investigating an assault on one of its own officers.
Police said the incident happened on Saturday evening on the Downtown Mall.
Officials say a Charlottesville officer saw a man masking his face. When the officer went towards him, both of them were knocked to the ground and swarmed the officer.
Other law enforcement pulled the people off the officer and helped him up.
The man masking his face and others rejoined the demonstration.
The officer was not injured. Other injuries were not reported from the altercation.
Charges are pending in the incident.
