HENRICO, VA (WWBT) - Henrico Public Schools officials confirmed Wednesday that a student at Shady Grove Elementary School was diagnosed with mumps recently.
A letter was sent home to parents Tuesday alerting them of the case, which comes just a few weeks after students at three other Henrico schools may have been may been exposed to the disease.
Symptoms include headaches, body aches, fever and swollen and tender glands in the jaw. However, some people exposed to mumps will not show any signs, health department officials said earlier this month.
The virus can spread through coughing, sneezing, or exposure to saliva from someone who is ill.
Parents were told that if their child has symptoms to take the letter to their doctor, who should then contact the Health Department to arrange for testing.
