Richmond has the 2nd best cell phone performance in U.S.

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - The Richmond metro area ranks second in the country on best cell phone performance, according to Root Metrics.

Root Metrics ranked 125 of the most populated metro areas in the U.S. based on six categories: overall performance, network reliability, network speed, data performance, call performance, and text performance.

"[The] rankings are based on an average of all networks' RootScores in a given metropolitan area, weighted by the estimated national percentage of subscribers for each network," the website said.

Richmond had an overall score of 97.9 and finished second in overall performance, making the jump from no. 15 overall since the previous round of testing.

The River City finished third in reliability and took the top spot in call performance.

Here are the rankings of the top five metro areas by performance:

  1. Indianapolis, Ind. - Overall score: 97.9
  2. Richmond, Va. - Overall score: 97.9
  3. Cleveland, Ohio - Overall score: 97.8
  4. Columbus, Ohio - Overall score: 97.8
  5. Minneapolis, Minn. - Overall score: 97.8

The Richmond area is the 44th largest metro in the U.S.
