Woman, dog escape house fire in Richmond's Northside

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - A woman and her German Shepherd were able to escape from a fire after flames erupted from her Northside home.

The fire happened around 3 a.m. on Friday at a home in the 4800 block of East Seminary Avenue, near John Marshall High School. The fire started on the back deck.

The battalion chief says the woman, who lives at the home, woke up to the sound and the smell of fire. She called 911, and she immediately escaped with her dog.

It did not take the fire department long to put the fire out. The fire was only on the back porch and did not extend into the home. However, the home smelled like smoke because of the fire.

The homeowner is staying at a neighbor's house.

There is no word yet on what started the fire. Fire crews left the scene around 5:30 a.m.
