'The Victor Movie' celebrates Richmond pastor who overcame addiction

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - A Richmond pastor has dedicated his life to helping others and now his story has turned into a movie.

The Victor Movie was written and created based on the life of Victor Torres of New Life Outreach Church. Torres immigrated from Puerto Rico to New York City as a child.

"At the age of 14 I took a needle for the first time and started using heroin," Torres said, "and by the age of 17-18  had been incarcerated three times already."

Torres said his life was in shambles until he found faith in his twenties with his mother's help.

"She had met a pastor who was starting a ministry," Torres said. "He was reaching out to people on the street, to a young man like myself."

Torres moved into the pastor's ministry and went through the specialized program for months. He got clean and started telling his story to young people nationwide.  One day, Torres got invited to speak in Richmond. He was in Richmond for a few months before he decided to make the area his permanent home.

Torres started New Life For Youth, a program that helps addicts recover by finding faith to get back on their feet. The organization provides shelter, food, and place to work like the Wash N Roll Carwash and a thrift store.

The Victor Movie is a story of his life and how he overcame the odds when the cards were stacked against him.

The movie has premiered both internationally and nationally and will premiere in Richmond on March 24 at Commonwealth 20.
