RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - The Richmond Sheriff's Office is warning residents about a jury duty scam.

"An individual identifying himself as a Richmond City Sheriff's deputy is contacting victims and informing them that they have missed jury duty and will be imprisoned unless they agree to pay $1,000 to $3,000," the sheriff's office said Tuesday in a news release.

The suspect tells the victim that only cash, a Money Pack or a Green Dot card from Walmart or Kroger will be accepted as payment. The caller also tells the victim to not go to the Richmond City Court House and instead says to call a number to arrange a meeting for payment.

If you receive a phone call of this nature, call the Richmond City Jury Office at (804) 646-6501.
