RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - Richmond Police are searching for a trio of suspects last seen driving away on Clay Street after they swiped packages from doorsteps in the middle of the day.
It's the time of year for holiday shopping both in stores and online, which means people will be getting packages delivered to their front door.
Wednesday afternoon Richmond Police were alerted to Clay Street and Brook Road after three suspects allegedly stole packages in broad daylight. Police say they are also looking for a suspect vehicle in the incident.
Residents who live on Clay Street say package theft has happened in their neighborhood in the last few weeks. Some have seen posts about incidents on the Nextdoor app.
"A lot of our neighbors have open porches and we don't have gates and stuff," explained Christina Dunlap, who lives on West Clay Street. "So it's fairly easy to snatch a package and keep on going."
A similar situation happened just days ago, and police are still looking for four suspects who stole packages from an apartment complex on North 20th Street.
During a time when package theft can be prevalent, the Richmond Police Department released the following tips to help your items protected:
• Consider having packages delivered to the store or a place of employment.
• Ask a family member or trusted neighbor to receive your parcels.
• Pick up packages at a local distribution center.
• Request signature on delivery.
Dunlap says her brother had a package stolen off their front porch, and ever since they have been extra careful.
"We just get it to another address or somewhere more secure," said Dunlap.
