RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - Around 30 teachers in Petersburg schools will receive laptops and training on computer science education as part of a pilot program with CodeVA.

The announcement came Monday at an Hour of Code launch event at the Science Museum of Virginia.

The computers and training are being made available to elementary school teachers in Petersburg with the help of Altria and Comcast, so they will be able to teach Computer Science in their classrooms.

Superintendent Dr. Marcus Newsome also announced every student at Peabody Middle School will get a laptop at the start of the 2017-2018 school year.

Monday is the kick off of Hour of Code, a global movement reaching tens of millions of students in 180+ countries.

Computer Science is now a core subject in all classrooms across Virginia under a law signed earlier this year by Gov. Terry McAuliffe. This week is also Computer Science Education Week in Virginia.
