RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - Police are looking for four people who stole packages from the lobby of a Richmond apartment complex, and they say the suspects brought a toddler along with them for the crime.
Surveillance cameras were rolling when police say a man carrying a toddler with a pink coat stole multiple packages from The American Tobacco Center Apartments on North 20th street.
"You just think, 'oh, we got key pads, we got security guys, we got all kinds of locks, that'll never happen,' but it can and it does," said Pierce Skinner, who lives at apartment building.
Police say it happened just before 10:30 p.m. Nov. 22. After hours, you have to use the keypad to get into the building, but an employee says the suspects followed a resident inside.
Employees say the packages had been dropped off after hours and left in the lobby near the Christmas tree. Police say the suspects also forced open a door to a mail room and took items stored in there.
People who live here say having the toddler with them would throw people off.
"Yeah, that's pretty weird," said Skinner. "If you had a kid and were to do it, no one would really question whether or not you lived here. That might just be part of their MO."
Richmond police say the holidays are a prime time for thieves to steal packages. But investigators say they haven't received a report about an apartment building being hit until now.
Tips from police include having packages delivered to your work instead of home.
