PETERSBURG, VA (WWBT) - The Dinwiddie Sheriff's Office says a man who fled from authorities and crashed into a Petersburg supermarket on Monday has been arrested.

Virginia State Police and Petersburg officials assisted in the arrest of 27-year-old Durrell Donte Mattox.

Deputies say around 8:52 a.m., the pursuit started after a traffic violation near Cedar Heart Lane and Ferndale Road. The vehicle got onto Route 1 into Petersburg. Petersburg officials say the vehicle was attempting to turn onto Elm Street from Washington Street but missed the turn and crashed into Harrison's Supermarket.

Authorities say Mattox then fled the scene on foot but was later arrested.

Mattox is charged with eluding law enforcement, driving on a suspended operator's license, speeding and failing to obey a highway sign. He also has an outstanding warrant for failing to pay child support. He will be in Dinwiddie County General District Court on Nov. 14.
