CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) - While there are just 11 days until election day, there is even less time if you are casting an absentee ballot.
Several deadlines are coming up for the people who qualify for one of the 19 reasons someone can submit an early vote in Virginia.
"I'm going to be out of the country, and I want to make sure my vote gets in. And I also want to avoid the lines this year," said voter Galia Moran.
Important dates to remember if voting absentee in the November 8 general election include:
- The deadline to apply for a ballot by mail is on Tuesday, November 1, 2016.
- The two Saturdays to vote absentee in-person are October 29 and November 5.
- The deadline to vote absentee in-person is on Saturday, November 5.
- The deadline to return your absentee ballot by mail is on Election Day, November 8, 2016.
The registrar must physically have your ballot by 7 p.m. on election night or it won't be counted.
"Voters should not delay. If they get a ballot that needs to be mailed back they should mark it and get it back in the mail to us quickly," said Chesterfield General Registrar Larry Haake.
Even if your absentee ballot is postmarked by Nov. 8, it will not be eligible if it's not at the registrar by that time. If you're going to deliver your vote, make sure you do it yourself or with a courier.
"A voter can deliver their own ballot. They can mail it. They can send it by couriers such as UPS or FedEx. They cannot get someone else to deliver their ballot for them," reminded Haake.
Remember, you need an accepted photo ID to vote in person. Photo ID is not required when mailing in your absentee ballot.
