RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - A total of 23 environmental activists were arrested Wednesday afternoon after they blocked the gate leading to the Governor's mansion in Richmond.
The activists have been protesting for the past three days, demanding that Governor Terry McAuliffe stand against proposed natural gas pipelines and push for stricter state requirements when it comes to coal ash.
"I want to charge the political will of the Governor of Virginia and to stand up for clean water and clean air," remarked Lee Williams, who was arrested during the protest.
Capitol Police said they worked out plans for the protest with activists ahead of time and noted that all the arrests were peaceful.
No one was taken to jail, but they were issued summons to appear in court.
