Maryland bus driver saves 20 children from burning bus

COLLEGE PARK, MD (WWBT) - A Maryland bus driver jumped into action to save several children when her school bus on fire Monday afternoon.

Parent Fazlul Kabir posted the photos to Facebook and identified the bus driver as Reneita Smith.

"A big THANK YOU to our school bus driver Reneita Smith who just saved 20 elementary school kids from a bus fire that completely destroyed the bus," Kabir said. "Not only [sic] Reneita took each one of the 20 kids from the bus one by one, but also went into the empty bus again to check if everyone was out, while it was still burning."

"I am a mom of two kids," Smith told Kabir. "It's my job to save them."

The bus caught fire on 51st Ave., located near Hollywood Road, in College Park, Md. around 4:45 p.m.

Video captured from the Branchville Volunteer Fire Company's dashcam shows heavy smoke coming from the back of the bus.

Officials say the fire seems to have originated from one of the back wheels and spread throughout the bus.

No one was injured, but fire officials say most of the children were picked up by their parents at the scene.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
