CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) - Marc Starkes' uncle Philip Reed said his 24-year-old nephew was in the wrong place at the wrong time.
Starkes of Amelia and 22-year-old Duval Turner of Richmond were both killed after being shot at an illegal house party in Chesterfield on Saturday night. One other man was injured but is recovering in the hospital.
Reed said his nephew Marc Starkes, who grew up in Amelia, was a cook in town. After a phone call with his sick grandmother on Saturday night, Reed said his nephew told his family that he'd be back, he was heading to a party.
The party Starkes attended included over 200 other people at a four-bedroom, vacant home under construction in Chesdin Landing in Chesterfield. Those who attended what police are calling a "modern day rave" saw an invitation that circulated on social media.
Sometime after 1:30 a.m., shots rang out and Starkes was hit.
"I hope they find who did this, because he was trying to do right," Reed said. "It's not the same looking outside, not seeing his car here, not seeing him here."
Another party goer said Starkes was shot in the back. They said he was found in the garage and Duval Turner was found unconscious by the staircase.
The person says they were upstairs with several other people when they heard one gunshot, followed by silence, then about eight more gun shots.
They waited until there was silence in the home, went downstairs and found the men reeling from their injuries. They immediately called 911.
Police continue their investigation into this incident. Anyone with information should contact the Chesterfield County Police Department at 804-748-1251 or Crime Solvers at 804-748-0660.
