VA man faces animal cruelty charge after puppy dies in SUV

DANVILLE, VA (WWBT) - A Danville man faces two counts of animal cruelty after police say he left two dogs in a hot SUV over the weekend. One of those dogs -- a 5-week-old puppy -- died.

WSLS in Roanoke says Danville officers found the dogs in physical distress just before 4 p.m. Sunday in a white SUV. The temperature at the time was just shy of 90 degrees.

Officers found the vehicle's owner, Tyshawn General, who admitted to owning the dog. However, he refused to cooperate with officers and was arrested.

The officers were able to get the keys for the SUV and immediately placed the dogs in an air-conditioned police vehicle and taken to a nearby shelter where they were treated.

There is no word on the condition of the dog that survived.

In addition to the animal cruelty charges, General was charged with one count of impeding police in violation and one count of simple possession of marijuana.
