UPS to lay off more than 150 workers in Richmond
RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - The UPS corporate office is laying off more than 150 people at UPS Freight in Richmond over the course of the next year.
Eighty of those positions will be eliminated in this quarter, UPS announced, with some of the jobs being cut Tuesday.
One NBC12 viewer says that employees from five different departments were escorted out of the building, located at 1000 Semmes Ave.
A spokesperson with UPS confirmed that notifications began Tuesday.
"The process is ongoing and our objective is to notify impacted employees as quickly as possible," said Glenn Zaccara, director of Corporate Public Relations at UPS.
UPS also released the following statement:
"UPS is streamlining support positions at its Richmond, VA Freight unit to address needed cost reductions and operating improvements. UPS Freight headquarters will continue in Richmond, however about 160 support positions will be impacted in the next twelve months as a result of realignment of duties into other UPS locations."
The other 80 jobs will be cut over the next 12 months, Zaccara says, but they are hiring for 45 other positions.
"Employees impacted are being offered an opportunity to apply for those roles," said Zaccara. "If all of these employees move into those different roles, the net impact in the next 12 months will be 115 positions, rather than the entire 160."
