RIO DE JANEIRO (WWBT) - Jamaica's Usain Bolt earned his ninth career gold medal Friday during the men's 4x100m relay, cruising to victory over a hard-charging Japan and United States in the final seconds.

For the men's 4x100m relay, Team USA's men came in with momentum after taking the top time during the preliminary heats, besting Japan by three-hundredths of a second.

Bolt and the Jamaican team finished fifth in the heats, nearly three-tenths behind the first-place United States.

In the final, the United States presented a challenge to the Jamaican team, but the final exchange saw Bolt increase their lead. The Japanese and United States team were in close pursuit, but didn't close the gap in time, allowing Bolt to capture gold in the event.

Even though the United States finished third, they were disqualified shortly after the end of the event, according to U.S. Track and Field. An issue with a baton exchange was cited as the cause for the disqualification.

As a result of the disqualification, Canada received the bronze medal.

The results of the Men's 4x100m relay are as follows:

  1. Jamaica – 37.27s (GOLD)
  2. Japan – 37.60s (SILVER)
  3. Canada – 37.64s (BRONZE)
  4. China – 37.90s
  5. Great Britain – 37.98s
  6. Brazil - 38.41s
  7. Trinidad and Tobago – DQ
  8. United States - DQ

On the women's side, it was Team USA who earned gold in the 4x100m relay at Olympic Stadium Friday.

A botched handover almost kept the women's 4x100m relay team from advancing to the final, but a protest was filed and the team won their appeal.

Allyson Felix and English Gardner took advantage of the second chance and helped the team make it into the final.

The United States faced tough competition from the Jamaican team, who finished only two-hundredths of a second behind the Americans in the heats.

In the final, the third leg of the relay saw the United States rocket to the lead, with the final exchange between English Gardner and Tori Bowie securing the dominant victory and gold medal for the United States.

The results of the Women's 4x100m relay are as follows:
