Detective Melvin passes away from rare form of cancer

The Richmond Police Department is mourning one of its own.

Richmond Detective David Melvin passed away on Monday, June 6 after a battle with Mantle Cell Lymphoma, a rare form of cancer.He leaves behind his wife Rebecca, his daughters, and many friends.

A 5k fundraiser was organized for Detective Melvin, which will still go on as planned this Sunday. They are asking for funds to assist his family with bringing David home from Seattle, funeral expenses, and extensive medical bills.

Det. Melvin was a 19-year veteran with Richmond police. He was most recently assigned to the Major Crimes Unit for Richmond police.

"Detective Melvin tenaciously worked his caseload - constantly driven by the victim's experiences in Youth and Family Crimes cases to bring justice," said Major Crimes Captain James Laino. "He was the embodiment of caring dedication to his community and the Department and will be missed."

Funeral arrangements for Det. Melvin are still being organized.
