This week, I had the pleasure of attending the annual Grant Awards Celebration for the Ujima Legacy Fund. The Ujima Legacy Fund is an African American male giving circle that provides yearly grants to deserving non-profits groups and organizations that work with youth in underserved communities in the Richmond Region.
Four years ago, a group of men decided to develop this giving circle and become part of the solution in a very demonstrative way. Their message: African American males giving financial support to organizations that are working with youth in underserved communities and making a difference.
This year, two organizations received a $20,000 grant to further their mission.
Richmond Cycling Corps works with youth in Richmond's public housing by providing them with experiences outside of their communities through cycling. Since March of 2010 they have participated in over 30 events in five states.
The second organization is Team Excel. Based on the concept of Fantasy Football, each week students receive individual and team scores based on their grades, attendance and community service. The student teams compete for weekly prizes and a grand prize that is awarded at the end of the year.
