LOUISA, VA (WWBT) - A Bumpass volunteer firefighter died after running off the road and hitting a tree in Louisa Wednesday afternoon.

It happened around 12:35 p.m. on Route 522 south, near Shelfar Drive.

Police say the driver of a 1987 Dodge pickup ran off the road, hit a tree, and caught fire.

The driver, 18-year-old Matthew L. Hensley of Mineral, was taken to VCU Medical Center where he later died from his injuries. Police say he was not wearing a seatbelt.

The Holly Grove Volunteer Fire Department says Hensley was a firefighter on their "non-active roster". The department has not released a press release or any comments surrounding the tragic loss out of respect for the family.
