Chesterfield teen creates jewelry to help others around the world

CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) - A saying heard by many people throughout their lives, "if you want something done, you've got to do it yourself," is being put into action by one Chesterfield teenager, and it is paying off, not only in her bank account, but in her faith.

Casie Owensby is the brains and beauty behind Casie O Designs.

Since October 2015, the 13-year-old has used her nimble fingers to build a small business.

"They're mama bird necklaces, and they represent how many children you have. Or they can even represent lost children," said Owensby.

The teenager also makes earrings to match.

Just like birds, her creations have taken off, landing in a local boutique and selling for a pretty penny.

"They are $20, and then the earrings are $10," said Owensby.

However, Owensby's mission to accessorize began with her desire to go on missions to help others.

"I always wanted to go to Guatemala. I just felt God was calling me to go there," said Owensby.

Her church was heading to the country on a mission trip and she wanted to go, but she needed hundreds of dollars to participate, which was not easy for her parents, who are raising a family of seven children.

"They asked 'how are you going to get all of the money,' because it was $1200 to go," said Owensby.

So, to raise the money, she started making jewelry.

After her mom posted pictures of her work on Facebook, the orders started pouring in and she soon had more than enough money for the week-long trip, which was back in March of this year.

Owensby says the trip was an unforgettable experience, which taught her to be more thankful.

"We went to an orphanage, we were playing with all the children, and they really just need somebody to love them," said Owensby.

"We go through our life just thinking about what we have to do during the day and not actually thinking that we have family that loves us, or like food to eat," she continued.

Owensby has also learned something else as her products continue to take flight.

"Just trust in the Lord, and keep on going and listen to Him," said Owensby.

All of the extra money Casie raised was donated to the orphanage in Guatemala.

She is currently hard at work trying to raise money for an upcoming mission trip to the Jersey Shore.
