Maryland firefighter honored at homecoming

PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY, MD (WRC/WWBT) - It was a homecoming more than a week in the making for one firefighter, as 19-year-old Kevin Swain was wheeled out of a trauma center in Baltimore.

Swain was shot four times while responding to a welfare check. His partner, John Ulmschneider, died.

On Saturday, Swain was smiling and shaking hands as he made his way to a fire engine for the ride home surrounded by his fellow firefighters

"A line of duty death is a dark moment. This is a ray of light. Get to gone home and spend time with your family," said Battalion Chief Eric Reith with Prince George's County Fire and Rescue.

The homeowner who fired the shots when firefighters forced their way in was apparently thinking someone was trying to break-in.
