PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY, MD (WWBT) - On Wednesday, hundreds of people gathered to say their final farewell to a fallen Maryland firefighter, who died in the line of duty.
John Ulmschneider was shot and killed last week when checking on the condition of a homeowner. The man was unresponsive when firefighters arrived at his home, which prompted a forced entry. The homeowner inside then fired several rounds because he thought Ulmschneider was an intruder.
"He stood off and said that when he laid down at night, that if he couldn't think of at least one person he helped during the course of that day, that he was unable to sleep. I believe that is the motivation that he had," said brother-in-law Chris Grayble.
No charges will be filed against the man, as police say he was acting in self-defense as he believed his house was being broken into.
Ulmschneider's funeral was held at St. John's Catholic Parish, followed by a private family burial.
