Hanover drug take-back event scheduled for April 30

HANOVER, VA (WWBT) - Hanover law enforcement is offering residents the chance to safely get rid of unwanted, unused, and expired prescription drugs during a drug take-back event scheduled for April 30.

The Hanover Sheriff's Office, working with the Ashland Police Department, Hanover's public works department, and the Drug Enforcement Agency's Office Diversion Control, will be hosting the prescription drug take-back at two locations on April 30 - The Mechanicsville Solid Waste Center, 7427 Verdi Ln, Mechanicsville, VA 23116, and the Ashland Police Department, 601 England St, Ashland, VA 23005 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Residents of the town of Ashland and Hanover County can utilize the service to turn over prescriptions, including over-the-counter and prescribed medicine, and liquid products, such as prescription cough syrups.

Illegal drugs, like marijuana and methamphetamine, along with intravenous solutions, injectables, and needles will not be accepted at the events.

"This initiative addresses a vital public safety and public health issue," Hanover Sheriff's Office said. "Medicines that languish in home cabinets are highly susceptible to diversion, misuse, and abuse."

Studies show that a majority of abused prescription drugs are obtained from family and friends, including from the home medicine cabinet. In addition, Americans are now advised that their usual methods for disposing of unused medicines—flushing them down the toilet or throwing them in the trash—pose potential safety and health hazards.

For those wanting to safely dispose of unwanted medications on April 30 and are not living in Hanover, several other localities are hosting similar events in the Metro Richmond area:

  • Richmond Police Department: Southside Community Service Center, 4100 Hull Street Road, Richmond, Va. 23224
