Petersburg mother on trial for murder: 'I was so scared'

PETERSBURG, VA (WWBT) - A Petersburg jury could decide the fate of a young mother accused of murdering her one-day-old baby as soon as Thursday. Back in 2014, police arrested Kadijah Mungin after she showed up to the emergency room with a questionable story.

A nurse testified in court Wednesday that Mungin went to Southside Regional saying Mungin had just flushed her newborn down the toilet because she had no clue she was pregnant. The nurse didn't buy the story and called the police.

Joshua Tucker, the father of the child, told the court he knew his ex-girlfriend was pregnant from the beginning and wanted to be a part of the child's life. But he says he got a call from police months later saying the baby was dead. That's when he named the one-day-old after himself and made funeral arrangements.

Video of police interrogating the mother shows her changing her story from flushing the baby down the toilet to actually wrapping him in a towel and placing him in a black garbage bag. Police say they found the child under Mungin's bed.

In that interrogation video, the defendant said she did it because she was frightened by what her parents would think. She said they didn't know she was
pregnant.

The murder case will resume Thursday with an image from the court that will likely remain on the juror's minds: photos of baby Joshua dead at the scene.
