VDOT asks motorists to stay off roads as freezing rain moves in

RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - The Virginia Department of Transportation is asking motorists to stay off the roads on Monday afternoon as light snow is changing to freezing rain

Virginia State Police have responded to more than 160 crashes across the Commonwealth, including one confirmed fatal incident in Fauquier County.

VDOT crews are working in 12-hour shifts to treat the roads, starting first on interstates, then primary roads. Many roads are in minor to moderate condition, meaning that icy patches and snow are covering major portions of roads.

In Central Virginia, staying off the roads isn't an option for everyone, though, as some people still have to go to work.

"The roads, the smaller roads in the back, in the neighborhood were a little slippery when I got out, but the main roads weren't too bad," said Chesterfield resident Kelly Tsengas.
