HENRICO, VA (WWBT) - Traveling from Richmond to the Mile High City will be a lot easier beginning in April.
The Richmond International Airport announced Monday that United will operate flights to Denver that will provide flyers access to "home of one of United's largest hub airports," said Kellie Clough, United's sales manager in Richmond.
Beginning April 5, flights from Denver to Richmond will arrive around 3:25 p.m. and flights from Richmond to Denver will depart around 4 p.m.
The new flight has been more than five years in the making, with airline officials considering passenger counts. Troy Bell with the Richmond International Airport pointed out more than 60,000 people travel between the two cities each year.
"If you take a look at passengers who go beyond Denver to the west coast, the potential passenger toll is well over 500,000," said Bell as he explained the move will make it easier for people to travel across the country. "Because of the ease of travel, it stimulates folks who otherwise weren't making the trip, or folks who may have traveled out of Richmond, now they have an easy option from their hometown airport."
"This is a highly desired option to the west made possible by the city of Richmond and the counties of Chesterfield, Hanover, and Henrico fostering a climate for economic growth and development, support from businesses large and small, and efforts of partners at the Greater Richmond Chamber and Richmond Region Tourism," said John V. Mazza Jr., chairman of the Capital Region Airport Commission.
Airport officials said more than 60,000 passengers travel from Richmond to Denver each year.
The Denver flight is the first of two destinations that Richmond International Airport is adding in 2016.
On Tuesday, Richmond International Airport officials will announce a direct flight to a "popular Florida destination," spokesman Troy Bell said. This announcement "is in addition to and not related to" the new Denver flight.
