Petersburg police investigating pair of homicides
Petersburg police are investigating a pair of overnight homicides that appear to be unrelated.
Around 12:40 Sunday morning, officers responded to the 1700 block of West Court in reference to a shots fired call.
There they found 21-year-old Kwaun A. Quarles suffering from a gunshot wound.
The victim was transported to Southside Regional Medical Center where he was later pronounced dead.
Less than an hour later, police were called to the 800 block of Rome Street for reports of a person shot.
They arrived to find 27-year-old Mark L. Barlow suffering from a gunshot wound.
He was transported to SRMC where he later died.
The two shootings appear unrelated however, police are following up on every lead.
Both cases are being investigated as homicides.
Friends of Barlow were shocked by the news of his death. They set up and make shift memorial near where he was found Sunday morning.
“He was a lovable caring person. He really loved his kids, that’s all he used to talk about, his kids. It’s just crazy that I ain’t going to be able to see him again,” said Keenisha Tucker.
After the pair of overnight shootings, neighbors say enough is enough. They are calling on lawmakers to help stop gun violence in their community.
“Everyone's saying it, but there is no action. That's what needs to change. Our officials need to come out here and be in the streets hands on, talking to us, mentoring us,” said Dominique Willis.
Police are asking anyone with information on either case, to contact the Petersburg/Dinwiddie Crime Solvers or the Petersburg Bureau of Police.
