RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - A scary abduction at a Shockoe Bottom gas station left a victim shot in the head. What would you do if you were confronted by a man with a gun?

"You've got three to five seconds to make a life-saving decision," said Refuse to be a Victim instructor Dee Dee Van Buren. "If you see somebody approaching you...distance is your friend. So you want to put something like your car in between the person who is talking to you."

This terrifying scene should serve as a lesson to us to all, says Van Buren, to plan for the unthinkable.

"Have the conversation ahead of time," said Van Buren. "Unfortunately into today's age, assaults have been increasing. Home invasions have been increasing."

Van Buren says even the fact that this happened at a gas station in broad daylight should not come as a surprise. She says the idea is to catch you off guard. We asked: what's the best way to respond if you're forced inside the car against your will?

"You can wreck the car because you've got an airbag," said Van Buren. "And hopefully the bad guy doesn't have his seat belt on, and you can run. Wreck the car as a last resort because you do not want to get to the secondary location."

David Napier, president of the Shockoe Bottom neighborhood association calls the entire ordeal horrific.

"Shockoe Bottom is safer than most neighborhoods in this town," said Napier. "This could have happened anywhere. I just hope that people will pray for the victim."
