Two N.C. teens charged for sexting

CUMBERLAND CO., N.C. (WWBT) - A 16-year-old high school quarterback and his girlfriend, who is now 17, face child pornography charges after sending each other nude photos of themselves.

The age of consent to engage in sexual intercourse in North Carolina is 16. However, since the two are minors, sending photos of themselves is a felony offense.

Police found the images on the boy's phone while investigating another case.

"Simple possession, having it on your cellphone is a charge itself," Sgt. Sean Swain of the Cumberland County Sheriff's Office says. "If you should send it out to another person, that's another charge."

Both of the teenagers face five counts of sexual exploitation for each of the five photos they allegedly sent each other.  If convicted, they would be forced to register as convicted sex offenders, under North Carolina law.
