WILLIAMSBURG, VA (WWBT) - According to WAVY our NBC affiliate, an active duty sailor shot and killed his wife in their home Sunday, while their two children were inside.

Around 12:44 a.m. deputies responded to a shooting in the 200 block of Wichita Lane, located in the Williamsburg area of York County, says York-Poquoson Sheriff's Office.

When deputies arrived on scene they found 27-year-old Katherine A. Freel had been fatally shot inside of the home. Katherine lived at the home with her husband Mark A. Freel, Jr. as well as their two children; a four-year-old son and five-month-old daughter.

The victim's husband 26-year-old Mark A. Freel, Jr. was arrested on scene and has been charged with second degree murder and use of a firearm during the commission of a felony.

He is being held without bond at the Virginia Peninsula Regional Jail.

The children were in the residence at the time, but were not injured. According to WAVY, the baby girl was sleeping when deputies arrived, but the boy was awake. Investigators cannot confirm where he was in the house, or whether he witnessed any part of the shooting.

The children have been placed in the care of the victim's family.
