RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - A GRTC CARE van burst into flames shortly after it started smoking on an Interstate 95 exit ramp on Tuesday afternoon.
The van was getting off the interstate near Boulevard when it started smoking.
"The driver of the van smelled smoke, followed protocol to get off the interstate immediately, and pulled the vehicle to the side of the road near Robin Hood Road and Hermitage Road," according to GRTC. "The driver and three passengers exited the vehicle safely and without injury. Flames were then reported visible, and the van was engulfed in flames."
A relief vehicle arrived to transport the stranded passengers.
There's no word on the cause of the fire at this time.
CORRECTION: Story originally said the bus driver continued to drive the bus while it was on fire. We have corrected the story to show that the driver pulled over after smelling smoke, and the fire broke out after the bus was evacuated. We apologize for the error.
