CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) - A home in rural Chesterfield goes up in flames Friday morning. The house was in the 18500 block of Genito Road and was vacant when the one alarm fire started. No one was hurt but firefighters still faced some challenges.

This part of Chesterfield county is a rural area without fire hydrants.

"Just so happened there was a pond that we were able to grab from prior to wetting another water supply to extinguish the fire," explained Chesterfield Battalion chief David Throckmorton.

The supply came from water tanks from both Chesterfield and Powhatan.

According to Battalion Chief Throckmorton the fire took about 40 minutes to bring the fire under control.

"We protected the exposure to the new dwelling which was behind the structure that was on fire so we spent time protecting it and then we extinguished the fire once we had all the water supply established," explained Throckmorton.

Firefighters not only had to battle the fire they also had to deal with the steamy temperatures.

"Today the humidity happened to be a little low so that made things a little better but we have water stations with fluids, we have personnel  hydrate prior to getting to a scene like this cause once you get on a scene you cannot get re hydrated," Throckmorton said.

He also said the fire is still under investigation.
