HENRICO, VA (WWBT) - A 2-year-old calf with a claim to worldwide fame brought his unique story to Henrico on Friday.

The young bull, named Hero, lost his back hooves to frostbite, making him the world's only living double amputee,  prostheses-wearing calf.  But Hero's current supports are wearing out, so a local expert volunteered to see what he could do.

Gil Mejia says he works mostly with people,  but he was up to the challenge:

"The challenges are on how to make them so they last," Mejia says. "These [current prostheses] are only three or four months old, and they are pretty worn out. We need to come up with some better ways."

"People in need of prosthetic legs came to see Hero and said, 'If he can do it with two legs, I can do it with one. And that would be my goal," explains Kitty Martin, who rescued Hero and now sees him more like a family pet.
