Richmond to get new, bigger recycling containers
RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - You may have noticed some new green and blue carts popping up around Richmond. If you live in a house or an apartment complex with four or fewer units, you'll soon be getting one of your own.
The city began a limited release of its new recycling containers back in January, and on Wednesday announced that it will soon begin a large-scale delivery to the rest of the city.
The carts are much larger than the green bins currently in use; 95 gallons compared to just 18 gallons. This will allow people to recycle much more than they have before.
Besides this, very little else will change. Your recycling pick-up day will be the same as it is now, the same materials will be recycled, and the cost of trash and recycling pick-up will remain the same. All you'll have to do once you get your new cart is fill it up and place it in the same spot as your trash can.
"If you have your trash collected in the alley, that's where your recycling will be collected. If you still have your trash collected curbside, then that's where your recycling will be collected," said Department of Public Works' Sharon North.
To encourage people to recycle more, the city is also unveiling a new incentive program to go along with the new containers.
"The cans have RFID tags on them. So when your can is emptied, it registers, and you can go online to Recycling Perks and sign up. You can get up to $25 a month in redeemable coupons to use at local merchants who also participate in Recycling Perks," said North.
The new carts will begin to be delivered the first week of July, but with approximately 57,000 carts to distribute, some people won't receive theirs until the end of the year. Until then, you can continue to use the green bin you already have.
