Dog park, 'sprayground' coming to Short Pump Park

SHORT PUMP, VA (WWBT) - Some big changes are about to come to Short Pump Park. New construction beginning this June is expected to make the park a new hotspot for dog lovers and moms alike.

After a 2005 bond referendum was passed approving the funds for an expansion of the park, it's taken ten years to plan and work out the details. Now those plans are finally becoming a reality and the wait looks to be worth it.

"You're going to see a network of trails that's going to connect with the surrounding land uses. You're going to see a dog park, a landscaped plaza and play area, a spray feature, fountain feature, and really some family oriented, passive recreational features that are going to come out of the ground as part of this park," said Neil Luther, the Director of Henrico County Recreation and Parks.

Most of the change will be coming to the corner of the park next to the intersection of Three Chopt and Pump roads. This is where the "sprayground" will be installed and the dog park is going to be constructed.

The "sprayground" will be very similar to the one recently built at Twin Hickory Park, providing the perfect place for kids to cool off during the summer. The only dog park currently in Henrico is in the East End at Dorey Park. Now owners and their dogs in the West End will have a new, fun destination to check out.

"It's basically to give an entirely enclosed area that has a secure gate so the dog owners can get their pets in, unclip them from the leash, and let them run free and play with each other. It's a social opportunity as much for the people as it is for the dogs," says Luther.

Moms like Jodi Tandett, who doesn't visit Short Pump Park currently, are excited about the coming changes.

"I definitely would go there if that were the case. The kids love the sprayground in the summertime. And it's always good to have a little place to stop when you're out in Short Pump doing all your shopping and what not," said Tandett.

The project will take a year to complete, but the county says there will not be any impacts to current visitors of Short Pump Park or traffic in the area. The grand opening for the new addition is currently scheduled for June 2016.
