Greyhound bus fire badly burns possible stowaway on I-95

STAFFORD, VA (WWBT) - First responders pulled a badly burned man from the baggage compartment of a Greyhound bus on Interstate 95 in Stafford, according to Virginia State Police.

The bus caught fire near the Garrisonville Road exit around 2:39 p.m. The driver pulled over when he smelled and saw smoke from the cabin. All 28 passengers were able to safely exit the bus. When Stafford Fire and Virginia State Police arrived, they found the fire was coming from the baggage compartment.

Authorities pulled a man from the compartment and he was flown to Washington Medical Center with life-threatening injuries.

The Stafford County Sheriff's Office helped all passengers get to a safe location off the interstate by using a school bus.

At 5 p.m., the center and left lanes of I-95 south are open to thru traffic.

State police are investigating the incident, to include the circumstances of how the individual got into the luggage compartment .
