MIDDLESEX, VA (WWBT) - A man is behind bars, charged with killing his neighbor, then barricading himself inside his home for hours!

The crime scene was the backyard of a riverfront home off Montague Island Road in the Jamaica area of Middlesex County.

A serene morning on the Rappahannock River was rattled by gunfire. One neighbor said her husband was out side when he heard the shots. "He comes running in, and he says, 'Call 911.' The neighbor had shot the other neighbor," she said.

Deputies rushed to the scene shortly after 9 a.m. Sunday. Sheriff David Bushey said investigators immediately discovered the body of a man in the back yard. Bushey said Michael Post, the armed suspect now charged with the victim's murder, evaded deputies.

"The suspect that shot him, ran into his home, was barricaded behind us here," Bushey said.

Neighbors on each side of the driveway and across the street were ordered to evacuate immediately.

One neighbor said, "We saw the big SWAT truck. We saw it go down the driveway. We saw them walking through the woods."

The Virginia State Police Task Force finally got Post, 64, to safely surrender nearly three hours after this all began. "The state police negotiated the gentleman out," Bushey said.

Post now faces first degree murder, news that's beyond shocking for a neighbor who's known him for 25 years.

"He didn't seem like he would do anything like that to anybody," she said.

Investigator said the reason they haven't released the name of the victim is because they're still trying to find that person's family. Meantime, Post is being held without bond.
