One killed in collision on Varina-Enon Bridge

HENRICO, VA (WWBT) - All lanes of Interstate 295 in Henrico are back open following to a fatal accident on the Varina-Enon Bridge Sunday afternoon.

The accident was reported after 1 p.m. Sunday on the Varina-Enon Bridge. According to State Police, a Jeep was stopped in the center lane of I-295 when a 2006 Freightliner tractor trailer loaded with frozen turkeys approached. Unable to avoid the stopped vehicle, the truck struck the Jeep in the rear, causing it to ignite and catch fire.

The driver of the 2006 Freightliner, William Lee Peterson, Jr., 52, of Rose Hill, NC was not injured in the crash, State Police said.  He was wearing a seatbelt.

The driver of the Jeep was pronounced dead at the scene. State police said they would release the identity of the victim after next of kin have been notified.

No charges have been filed yet, but the investigation is ongoing.
