CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) - A teacher at a private school is on administrative leave accused of assaulting a woman in the parking lot of a Chesterfield school.
Police say Melvin David Hunt is facing that charge for cutting a woman's hair in the Elizabeth Davis Middle School parking lot. It happened in front of parents, students and faculty.
Hunt, 61, has been an educator for years.
Now, police say he has a new mark on his permanent record: an assault charge and protective order after that incident Friday afternoon.
Police say it was in a parking lot much like any other that Melvin Hunt hugged the victim and when he did he cut several inches from her long hair.
According to police, the two had planned to meet to head out on a trip together, and this happened after Hunt said they wouldn't be traveling together.
From there, Hunt took off, and the teacher called the police.
Hunt was arrested Sunday and charged with assault.
According to the principal at Riverside School, Hunt is now on administrative leave.
