RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - Anyone who's ever held a yard sale knows it can be hard work, but they are worth it to clear out your home and make some money in the process.
Here are some steps you can take to make your garage sale more successful.
It's not a yard sale "Field of Dreams," where you put it out and they will come - you have to advertise, such as on craigslist.
Make sure you list the neighborhood and zip. That's how many check for sales. Include general categories and big ticket items.
Your signs need to be clear, concise and able to be read from a car. Times and address are irrelevant.
Get your neighbors involved. Potential shoppers are more likely to come if they have multiple houses to visit.
Clean everything, but don't go overboard. Use tables to lift everything off the ground. Many of your customers have a hard time hunching over and will bypass an item if they have bend for it.
Plastic sheets from the Dollar Store cover tables for a more polished effect. Bedsheets work too. Label everything individually and price incrementally for quick math. Group like-items, such as CDs together. Use one sign for the whole box.
Hagglers are inevitable and can be aggressive. Don't bargain with them until the latter half of the sale. Put one or two items that appeal to men out front - they're a good chunk of your audience. Rearrange your items as things sell.
Make sure you have batteries, an extension cord, lots of bags and at least 50 $1 bills for change.
