Dead cat found stuffed in family's mailbox
CHESTERFIELD, VA (WWBT) - A woman found her family cat dead, stuffed in her mailbox in Chesterfield. Now, police are investigating the incident as a possible case of animal cruelty. It happened on Madras Circle, Tuesday afternoon.
"Clover", a black rescue cat, was a special Valentine's gift and a beloved member of the family. Monday night, his family let him outside around 10:30 or 11pm. They say he usually stays in the yard and enjoys being outside.
Clover's owner went to check the mail around 1:20pm, and was horrified to find him dead in the mailbox. She immediately called police.
The victim says when responders arrived, they felt the cat as they pulled it out of the mailbox. Because it was so stiff, they think it must have been in here for a little bit of time. They also say it didn't appear to have any injuries on its body, but its eyes looked a little funny and it had some blood coming out of its mouth.
Plus, she says it is unlikely Clover could have crawled into this mailbox head first and then shut the door. The family is spooked by whoever may have put him in there, and why.
Police say there are no other cases of cats killed in the area recently, but they are investigating and say they take cases like this one seriously.
Clover's body will go to an animal expert who will study to see how he may have died.
