RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - We're investigating your complaints about a strange text. It  says there's trouble with your credit or debit card. We've gotten calls, emails, and Facebook posts, all wanting to know if it's legitimate.

That suspicious text says it's from Chesterfield Federal Credit Union and you're told to call a number to reactivate your card.  We checked with the credit union and Communications Director, Chris Miller confirms it's a scam.

He says crooks are after your account and pin number. "It is really targeting the entire community. We actually receive the most call from non-members. They were concerned because they thought someone had opened an account in their name," he explains.

Millers says some people do sign up for text alerts but those will only provide information you requested, like an account balance. "The basic rule of thumb is that a financial institution is not going to text you and ask for personal information," Miller says.

Also keep in mind, the bank already has all your personal information, so they don't need to ask for it. Miller says this is not a just a problem for Chesterfield Federal Credit Union but for most financial institutions.  "You are not in any danger, your card is not in any danger, your accounts are not in any danger. If you did respond to it, contact your financial institution," Miller says.

Also, if you've replied, you may want to cancel your card and keep an eye on your bank account. Catching the crooks is nearly impossible because they are usually overseas. Your best protection, delete the text and if you have concerns contact your bank.
