Henrico ex-deputy arrested, accused of having sex with inmate
HENRICO, VA (WWBT) - A former Henrico sheriff's deputy is now in jail accused of having a sexual relationship with an inmate at Henrico Jail West.
33-year-old Jennifer Ann Baran is now charged with three felony counts of carnal knowledge of an inmate by an employee. She was just arrested on Wednesday after a year long internal investigation.
The Henrico Sheriff's office believes the relationship started in January 2012. Undersheriff Colonel Carlos Talley says a staff member told administrators Baran had an unusual relationship with an inmate.
"She was the caregiver and was proving a little more caregiving than she was supposed to be," said Col. Talley.
The investigation began in April 2012 when deputies were told that inmate had a cell phone in his jail cell which they believe Baran had provided. Talley says while investigators tried to obtain the phone, the inmate flushed it down the toilet. Deputies also found 25 love letters allegedly from Baran to the inmate, in her handwriting.
Talley says Baran was immediately suspended and an investigation was launched with the Henrico Commonwealth's Attorney and State Police.
Baran resigned from the sheriff's office in May 2012.
She was arrested on Wednesday and is now in Pamunkey Regional Jail. The sheriff's office says Jennifer Baran was also once related to Patricia Baran who is also an ex-sheriff's deputy who was just sentenced this year for drug charges.
