RICHMOND, VA (WWBT) - Petersburg fire crews battled a single alarm fire on Sycamore Street early Monday, one that sent flames higher than nearby church steeples and destroyed four buildings before sunrise.

The blaze could be seen from I-95 shortly after midnight, sparked within an abandoned home near the corner of Sycamore and Wythe Streets. A woman escaped with a pet before the flames could reach her apartment, and one firefighter reported a minor back injury.

The fire destroyed Bland's Florist and Shammah's Salon. A century-old chimney, one of the few parts of the abandoned home left standing, threatened to collapse into Lighthouse Furniture & Appliance.

Crews determined that the chimney would be taken down by a backhoe Monday, before it could cause further property damage.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
